What is a Food License?
A Food License is a mandatory registration or license issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act, 2006) for businesses involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, or sale of food products in India. It ensures that food businesses comply with food safety and hygiene standards and protects consumers from adulterated or unsafe food.
All food business operators (FBOs) must obtain a license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) before commencing operations.

Types of Food Licenses
FSSAI issues licenses based on business scale, nature, and risk category:

- Identity and address proof of promoters/owners (PAN, Aadhaar, Passport)
- List of food categories and product details
- Business premises address proof (rent agreement, electricity bill, NOC from owner)
- Food safety management plan or SOPs for hygiene and processing
- List of equipment, machinery, and storage facilities
- Form B (Application form for license/registration)
Procedure for Food License
- Determine whether your business requires registration, state license, or central license.
- Gather required documents and fill out Form A or Form B depending on registration or license type.
- Submit the application online via the FSSAI portal (https://foscos.fssai.gov.in) or to the concerned authority.
- Pay the applicable license fee based on type and duration (1–5 years).
- Inspection by FSSAI officers may be conducted for compliance verification.
- Upon approval, receive the FSSAI License/Registration certificate with a unique 14-digit FSSAI number.
Validity
- FSSAI licenses are valid for 1 to 5 years, renewable before expiry.
